A.G. Sulzberger / New York Times

West Des Moines, Iowa– The visit was, according to the official line, just a book signing — a chance for Sarah Palin to scrawl her signature for a few hundred fans on copies of her latest work. But against a backdrop of unceasing speculation about her future and coming after recent interviews in which Palin acknowledged that, yes, she was thinking about running and, yes, she thought she could win, her return to the state expected to play a central role in determining the next Republican nominee for president took on, intentionally or not, a distinctly political flavor.

The line of autograph seekers that snaked around the Borders bookstore buzzed with the same two questions that trail Palin these days: Would she and should she? Those expecting clarity, however, would leave disappointed. “Thank you for your encouragement,” was all she told them.

During her three-hour visit, Palin was insulated from both the crowd and the news media. She arrived and left through a separate entrance and spent her time behind a black curtain at the back of the store, though two of her daughters wandered freely, signing autographs. People were required to leave their cellphones and cameras before approaching Palin. Reporters were prohibited from asking questions, though photographers were allowed to take pictures.

“It really bothered me, actually,” said Todd Steinberg, 52, a medical worker from nearby Johnston, who described himself as a committed supporter. “I’d like to see her not be so closed or censored with her public appearances.”

If anything, the visit mostly offered a reminder that Palin — a paid Fox News commentator, star of a reality television program and mother of a dancing star — sure knows how to draw a crowd, pulling in at least five times the number of people who turned out here the previous week for Newt Gingrich. Donna Otis, 66, a small-business owner from Des Moines, said: “There’s a draw for her I can’t explain. You want to see Sarah.”

There was a mix of strong opinions as to whether Palin, a former Republican nominee for vice president and governor of Alaska, should declare herself a candidate. (A poll here over the summer of likely Republican voters found that Palin was viewed favorably by 58 percent and unfavorably by 39 percent, with just 3 percent undecided.) “I would like her to run and I would definitely vote for her,” said Mary Kirkpatrick, a retired United Parcel Service worker from Des Moines, clutching a newly purchased copy of Palin’s book, “America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith and Flag” (Harper), which was published Tuesday. “But there is no need to rush right now because she’s doing things like this and her face is constantly on TV.”

Kristin Blackman, 39, took the opposite view, saying that Palin was an effective advocate for the views of conservative Christian women. “I don’t necessarily want to see her in office,” she said. “I like the role she’s in right now.”

The start of the political season here has been slower and more tentative then usual. Palin and her political plans, whatever they may be, continue to loom large over a slowly assembling field of possible candidates eager to be the party’s choice to take on President Barack Obama. But while others have begun lining up support, Palin has developed a reputation for being inaccessible, leading some to question how serious she is about running.

“There are a lot of people who are willing to engage with her, but right now its almost impossible,” said Craig Robinson, who was political director for the Iowa Republican Party during the last caucus and now runs the website The Iowa Republican. “If I wanted to reach out, I wouldn’t know how to do it.”

This is Palin’s third visit to the state since the last presidential campaign. She will return again Thursday at the end of her nine-day, 13-state book tour for an appearance in Spirit Lake.

Her events here have been criticized for being mostly staged, with less of the give-and-take seen as critical in a state where voters are used to meeting politicians in person. Amy Linney, general manager of the bookstore, said that when Gingrich and former Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas held far smaller book signings at the store, “there weren’t as many stipulations.”

But after signing more than 500 books, Palin left her table to approach the stragglers who had been told they had arrived too late. With a beaming smile, she patiently signed more books and urged the crowd to watch her show the next night.

And she sidestepped a question from a reporter about when she would decide to run. “Oh my goodness!” she said.

Then another person asked for her autograph. “Thanks for changing the subject for me,” she said.

<g:plusone size="" href="http%3A%2F%2Fyes-23.com%2Fpolitics%2Fjoe-biden-best-comment-at-the-summit%2F"></g:plusone>

I watched the entire health care bill summit yesterday. It was entertaining political theater at best. Joe Biden actually made the most intelligent statement of the day when he was giving his opening remarks. Our VP said he had no idea what the American people were thinking. This is a very telling statement that I think could be said of almost every politician in that room. I think the Democrats have no clue what the American people want and in the case of the health care bill I don’t think they care. The Republicans claimed to know and reduced what they think to, “scrap the bill and start over.”

I don’t know what the rest of America wants but I agree that they need to scrap that 2700 page monstrosity and look at true reform and cost reduction. I listened to both sides and could find valid arguments coming from both sides. It is evident that reform and cost reduction is really needed in this industry. One would think, with the resources available to the Congress, they could identify the cost drivers, government law and regulations that are driving the cost increases up and fix the problem. First they would have to set aside their ideological differences and work together. I think this is no longer possible in Washington.

The talking heads were interesting to watch as they analyzed they event. I watched Fox News and MSNBC. Chris Matthews was beside his self on how well the President and the Democrats controlled the meeting and seemed convinced that the bill will be passed. Fox folks seemed sure it was a set up to get public opinion on their side so they can take the reconciliation route and not get hammered in the 2010 mid-terms.

I don’t know what to think except that with a bill this size one has to know that a one day meeting after a year of contentious debate was not going to provide consensus. There is a big ideological difference between the two parties on this subject. I do know that we, the American people, will not have reform that will do what we need and it looks to me that we will have a bill that increases our costs, taxes and is mandatory. America is in trouble when the government tells us we have to buy something at prices they determine.

<g:plusone size="" href="http%3A%2F%2Fyes-23.com%2Fpolitics%2Fbudget-deficit-freeze%2F"></g:plusone>

Here we go again, magic numbers, borrow your way out of debt and put forward as many of your ideological programs as you think you can sneak through. I would think every American in this country is cutting spending, reducing borrowing and trying to reduce their debt. They realize that they can no longer deficit spend or pay debt with more debt, not our government though. I don’t care if you are Republican or Democrat, I don’t care if the Bush administration had a trillion dollar deficit you inherited, I don’t care that the country is in a depression, you cannot borrow your way out of debt.
Has anything changed in the past year to change the practices of the our banking institutions and how they do business? Has Congress accomplished anything that will benefit and protect the American people?
The Congress focused on health care and cap and trade for a year and voters sent them a message. There are various in opinions of what that message was but the politicians have decided it is JOBS. I think there was a little more to the message than jobs. I think there is a real concern for our debt as a nation, I believe the people have a strong belief that our politicians are not listening to them or addressing their needs, I believe the American people are tired of the extreme separation between the political parties and the simple fact they cannot agree on anything or get anything done that benefits the American people.
Why is a high speed rail system being funded in Florida? 8 billion dollars will not get a mile of track laid when you consider all the money required for the various environmental studies, right of way acquisitions and on and on. They want a new jobs stimulus bill when the last one is not working or fully implemented. The President said almost two million jobs have been saved or created yet the recovery.gov report says only around 600k jobs have been created as a result of the stimulus and only about $54 billion has been spent of the total allocated.
I think they actually believe were are stupid, they have shifted focus and are embarking on a new campaign trail with a new sales pitch to convince us they are actually listening to us and are going to produce what we want. But what has changed? The Obama administration wasn’t going to do no-bid contracts and yet they gave one to a large campaign contributor until Fox News reported it and then they tabled the contract. What’s up with that?
I watched the President meet with the Republicans, the exchange was less than inspiring. The President told them to bring him ideas and plans and he would consider them. I guess he will but I believe he will never embrace any of them because, contrary to his statement, he is an ideologue. When you need an excuse any excuse will do.
We have the 2011 budget proposal moving towards congress and the net results are the largest deficit in the history of this country, where will we get the money? I predict all of our taxes will rise and we still will have to borrow the majority of the money if we can find lenders. There are tensions between China and the United States over Taiwan and other issues not to mention we already owe them close to a trillion dollars. I don’t see how we can fund this budget without substantial cuts to almost everything. What about the $500 billion in Medicare savings they claimed they could get during the health care debates? Is it no longer possible to achieve those savings? Oh I get it, it is a political issue, you cannot cut Medicare. What about all that waste, fraud and abuse.
We need to reduce all phases of the government budget and not implement new spending programs. Yes, I know this is a simplistic view but it is the way most people approach their own budget, cut what you can, pay what you need to live and do without.

<g:plusone size="" href="http%3A%2F%2Fyes-23.com%2Fpolitics%2Farizona-mayo-clinic-drops-medicare-patients%2F"></g:plusone>

Fox News reported that the Mayo Clinic in Arizona is no longer taking Medicare patients because they are only recovering about 55% of their costs. I see this as a trend that is not likely to end anytime soon. The Congress thinks it can fix health care but has never done anything to fix Medicare. They establish prices for participating health care providers and the insurance companies use these as a guideline to establish what they will pay the same providers.
We have heard about the evil insurance companies and their exorbitant profits and yet no one talks about the high cost of service from the health care providers. I know doctors spend many years and dollars to learn their craft and no doubt they deserve compensation. I know it is extremely costly to run a hospital, but what are the limits.
The market would determine pricing if the government and insurance companies were not paying the bills. We have created a third party payment system that begs to be abused.
I don’t have the answer to the problem because I know when your sick or injured you want care and will try to get it no matter what. Congress has created a monster that will only keep getting worse because they don’t have the answers either. I do know that regardless of what anyone does medical care will continue to get more expensive as will our health insurance.
I am facing Medicare in a few years, I have no choice even though I currently have a private insurance plan. What will I get when I join the ranks of a government run system that is going broke and will not be accepted by the health care industry?
The Congress is returning to session and will complete work on this bill, we will get a bunch of laws that make the current system more expensive and cumbersome than it is now. I honestly believe that our representatives have no concept of how the average American lives. I really think they believe that a cost $400 to $600 a month for folks making $20 to $30K a year is no big deal. I really don’t believe Nancy Pelosi even needs health insurance. She is very rich in case you didn’t know.
Well folks we are going to get something none of us wanted at a price we can’t afford simply because certain elements of our population feels the government is better equipped to take care of us than we are. They are doing it because they want to control us and maintain or increase their perceived power over us. I know many of you don’t believe this to be true and think we should have health care for all. I don’t disagree with this in principle, I only disagree with how our leadership is going about the process. You see they have lost sight of the original premise, which was, lower cost, cover all.
I believe if you look at what is being forced on us by Congress you will see it doesn’t even come close to meeting the President’s stated goals.

It was enlightening.

For sometime now President Obama has been making comments concerning Fox News coverage of his policies. He is quite concerned with the coverage he is receiving on this network. It appears that he is using his bully pulpit to infer that Fox coverage is inaccurate and unfair.

Rahm Emanuel stated on CNN Sunday morning that Fox News was not a legitimate news organization and the administration was concerned that CNN and other networks would follow Fox’s lead. I assume in pursuit of higher ratings, or perhaps the truth?

I listen to Fox News daily and find the hard news coverage accurate. I listen to the commentary shows and get what I expect, more conservative opinions, and negative reaction to the Presidents policies.

I also listen to MSNBC daily and find the hard news coverage accurate. I listen to the commentary shows and get what I expect, more liberal opinions, and positive reaction to the Presidents policies.

I wonder why Rahm Emanuel and President Obama do not place the same criticism on MSNBC. Could it be because MSNBC is a staunch supporter of the Presidents policies? In my opinion the majority of the news media is “in the tank” for the President and his policies. Fox is not.

I keep saying that the extreme left is applying the same old tactics of attack and destroy by whatever means necessary to achieve their goals. These tactics include discrediting or silencing anyone who disagrees with their position.

We the people have been called many names for participating in the Tea Party demonstrations, Fox News is now on the hot seat and the insurance companies are now the enemy.

In my opinion, if you have to demonize the opposition your ideas are probably not very good. If you have a product folks like, you will not have any problem convincing folks to get on board.

Maybe Fox coverage is swaying public opinion of President Obama’s policies. If this is the case perhaps MSNBC and the rest should follow the Fox lead because apparently Fox is doing something right and the public finds them believable.

I am sure the current administration is very concerned with public opinion. You can tell by how they continue to ignore “we the people”.
