What Happened to Representative Government? Deem It Passed?

Ok folks let’s look at the health care reform bill. What do we know? We know that it was created behind closed doors, in secret, it will cut Medicare benefits, it counts dollars spent twice, the poverty level base line is raised to accommodate more folks in Medicaid, it will supposedly insure 30 million folks currently without coverage at great expense to all of us. We know that sweetheart deals were made to get votes, we will pay for 10 years to get 6 years of coverage, we know our taxes will grow exponentially, we know that when the exchange is created the government will control health care coverage, we know that we all will be forced to buy coverage or pay a fine, and on and on, show me the benefits.
Nancy Pelosi says we need to pass this so the American people will know what it contains. She and Harry Reid think we are stupid and don’t know what is good for us. I say we know what is good for us and this bill is not.
The Democrats keep saying that we the people are not concerned with the process and dismiss anyone who brings it up. I know I am concerned that this Administration and the Democratic leadership keep find ways around what used to be the constitutional process to get what they want, regardless of what the American people want. Go to Glenn Beck’s website or listen to his TV program today, he has a matrix he is going to publish that shows all the circumvention methods that these people have used, it is eye opening. I will try to repost it here when it becomes available.
We must continue to call and write these people in charge and let them know this is a Democracy and just because you won an election doesn’t mean it suddenly became a dictatorship.

I do hope that you’ve done more than just listen to Glenn Beck on this issue. He is, arguably, an excellent entertainer, but a lousy source for objective, factual information. I don’t enjoy his form of entertainment though.

Here’s a more reliable source of information, from the conservative think tank American Enterprise Institute. I know some will comment that the writer, Norm Ornstein, is not a “true” conservative, but it used to be that being fair and even-handed with the facts was enough for us. Now everything is filtered through a hyper-partisan “purity” test before it is accepted. Sigh . . .anyway, Norm Ornstein writes:

“Any veteran observer of Congress is used to the rampant hypocrisy over the use of parliamentary procedures that shifts totally from one side to the other as a majority moves to minority status, and vice versa. But I can’t recall a level of feigned indignation nearly as great as what we are seeing now from congressional Republicans and their acolytes at the Wall Street Journal, and on blogs, talk radio, and cable news. It reached a ridiculous level of misinformation and disinformation over the use of reconciliation, and now threatens to top that level over the projected use of a self-executing rule by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. In the last Congress that Republicans controlled, from 2005 to 2006, Rules Committee Chairman David Dreier used the self-executing rule more than 35 times, and was no stranger to the concept of “deem and pass.” That strategy, then decried by the House Democrats who are now using it, and now being called unconstitutional by WSJ editorialists, was defended by House Republicans in court (and upheld). Dreier used it for a $40 billion deficit reduction package so that his fellow GOPers could avoid an embarrassing vote on immigration. I don’t like self-executing rules by either party—I prefer the “regular order”—so I am not going to say this is a great idea by the Democrats. But even so—is there no shame anymore?”
