Health care, not a right, financial crisis is here, U.S. dollar in trouble, China investing in Iran, Congress and Obama out of control.

Ripped dollar bill Economy Concept ImageCome on America wake up! Our lives in this country are on the verge of changing in a manner you won’t like! Let’s face the facts! Our economy is in trouble!

The Bush administration rushed forward with an ill conceived plan that Congress rushed through the legislative process and the boys on the hill began to execute. The Obama administration continues to execute this plan, at least their version. The Obama team and Congress rushed through a stimulus plan to save and create jobs. Were these efforts effective? Hell I don’t know, but I do know that unemployment keeps rising, I do know we had to borrow trillions of dollars to support the legislation, I do know China is holding at least a trillion dollars of our debt and according to Ron Paul on the Beck radio program this morning, investing that money in Iran, I do know that the dollar is the world currency and their is a little doubt that if that changes and the dollar is devalued our country is in real trouble.

Many people are focused on health care reform, many on cap and trade, many on education reform and the list goes on. The point is they are all looking to the government to “fix” these issues. I maintain that the most important issue is this countries economy! If government spending and borrowing is not brought under control, if our debt is not reduced, all these grandiose plans will not really matter because we will be trying to figure out how to eat and how to live.

Listen, I am not an economist, I am not an expert in anything, I am just the common man wondering what happened and why the government did not do it’s job of oversight and regulation in the first place.

Listen folks, I wonder why if congress and the President are truly adamant about health care reform, then why are the Insurance companies exempt from the Sherman anti-trust laws? You may think that only Major League Baseball enjoys this benefit! Not true. On MSNBC’s Morning Meeting yesterday Dylan Ratigan was discussing this issue. He wrote an editorial in the Huffington Post describing this wonderful perk the insurance companies enjoy. The question he posed is simply, if you want reform why eliminate competition? My question is, why isn’t congress screaming to eliminate this wonderful perk, could it be campaign contributions? Could it be they really want a government single payer system? I DON’T KNOW, but true reform would bring cost down and not add to Americas debt!

I am truly concerned by how our government representatives are legislating us into a financial crisis. How the current administration is so naive and egotistical as not to be able to admit it is time to tighten our belts. They need to put all the social programs on hold until we can afford them and move towards debt reduction.

Listen, health care is not a right guaranteed to us in the constitution, I would love to have an efficient, cost effective, inexpensive health care program in this country with every citizen enjoying the benefits of coverage. I believe reform is necessary, but until we see honest full disclosure of all the issues and until it can be done budget neutral this will never happen. If we continue to push in the direction we are now it will further add to the cost of government and if combined with all the current bloated budget items this country will collapse financially.

So folks I say, Mr. President quit acting like the Chicago Chamber of Commerce or head of the U.S. Olympic Committee, come home and begin to focus on the issues of budget constraints and debt reduction.

While it is true our economy is going through some tough times, and it may be true we aren’t going to like some of the changes down the road, we should be aware that change is always difficult and that nobody, contrary to their opinion, knows what those changes will be or how it will affect them.

One of the big problems in America is our loss of connection to God (however you care to define that relationship) and our worship of consumerism and materialism. The changes that are coming down the road will, in my opinion, have the effect of making us back off a bit in our consumption. We are a nation that consumes everything and creates nothing. Where is our manufacturing base? We buy everything from other countries.

While it is true that unemployment continues to rise, the rate has slowed sharply from a year ago. Borrowing money from China is nothing new. We have been doing that since shortly after Nixon’s rapproachment with China back in the 70′s. The problem is the unfettered activites of corporate America. If we don’t do something to make sure our banking, insurance, and investment industries comply with the law and act in an ethical manner, we are going to repeat today’s financial crisis over and over again.

Bush rushed through a plan to save the banks and Obama rushed through a plan to save jobs. Only time will tell if either effort was successful. While the unemplyment rate is slowing down, however, the banks continue to hold the “toxic assets” our tax dollars were supposed to be used to get off the books and get our economy rolling again. What has happened is that banks like Chase and Bank of America have used that money, our tax dollars, to buy up smaller banks and consolidate their grip on America’s financial neck.

As for the dollar being devalued, take a look, my friend. The Euro has been more stable and more desired by investors for years. There are some who want to establish the same kind of regional partnership as the European Union but, of course, our neighbors don’t have the same economic base as the European neighbors so I don’t think that could work. That does not mean we should not cooperate with our neighbors, it just means the European model will not work in the Western Hemisphere.

Which brings me to my last point. While you are correct that health care is not a right (specifically) guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution, neither is MediCare, Medicaid, social security, the federal public health prgram, public schools, highways, possession of automatic assault rifles, Internet access, etc., etc.. We must face the fact that many of these issues are not, specifically, addressed in the Constitution because they were not even a dream 230 years ago. You’ve heard the joke that “Conservatives are worshippers of dead Liberals.” They continue to live in the past. The world has changed since the Constitution was written. The framers of the Constitution were geniuses and men of vision. I believe the Constitution is a living document that guides us, not keep us living in the past.

As I see it, there are two major issues in health care reform that cannot be ignored. The first is the indensible rates charged by the insurance companies. In today’s world, the provision of health insurance by America’s industries is a line item expense that is almost as large as wages. When America’s industries have to compete with industries in countries whose health care provisions are less than 10% of those in the U.S., American industry cannot compete. The cost of doing business is too great. I know there are those who put the blame on government regulation, but that is just ideological hubris talking.

In addition to the cost of health care there is the issue of health. We like to think of ourselves as the greatest and most powerful nation in the world – with third world health care. Infant mortality/morbidity, length of life, heart attack survival, child health, childhood obesity, and cancer survival, just to name a few, fail to make the top 20 among industrialized nations. Yes, America is powerful. But Americans can’t walk a block without breathing hard.
